17 May Song writing tips – straight from the horses’ mouth
Our Yr 9 and 10 GCSE music students were treated to a song writing workshop delivered by the acoustic duo Zeb and Sam Haynes who make up the band ‘Paper Horse’. The accomplished singer songwriters (who are also brothers) brought plenty of energy and vitality to the one off session whilst giving students an insight into song structure, lyric writing and ways to tap into their talent to kick start their own musical journey.
“It was really useful for the students to hear about the song writing process from active song writers and performers,” says Graeme Hardman, faculty leader for creative media at Brixham College. “Tailored to their age and the curriculum, the session provided a great source of inspiration to enable their own creative abilities,” he adds.
Zeb and Sam’s emphasis on vocal harmony and their ability to make music on a wide range of instrumentation made them great partners to work with. They rewarded our students with a taste of their own music from Paper Horse and its explosive mix of alternative rock and power pop. Having also shared the stage with the likes of Mark Morris (Blue Tones), The Futureheads and Matt Berry (I.T Crowd), they also gave students a glimpse into what life as a musician is like.
